Sufficiency of Textbooks and Instructional Materials

TO ALL INTERESTED PARTIES, IN PARTICULAR, BUT NOT EXCLUSIVELY, PARENTS, GUARDIANS, TEACHERS, BARGAINING UNIT LEADERS, AND MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY INTERESTED IN THE AFFAIRS OF THE OAKLAND UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT

PLEASE TAKE NOTICE that on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, the Governing Board (“Board”) of the Oakland Unified School District at a Regular Meeting, in the Great Room, LaEscuelita Elementary School, 1050 2nd Avenue, Oakland, CA (entrance at or near 286 East 10th St. Okland, CA 94606), will hold a Public Hearing at 7:00 P.M., or as soon thereafter as the matter may be heard, on the District’s Sufficiency of Textbooks and Instructional Materials—School Year 2024-2025.

The Public Hearing, as stated herein, will be held in-person, at the location stated above and, from the location, Internet Streamed - Zoom and/or Granicus; and/or Broadcasted - KDOL-TV (Comcast Channel 27 and/or AT&T Channel 99) (simultaneously). To observe and/or participate in the Public Hearing, in person or via internet streaming, please see instructions in the Agenda for the Board’s Regular Meeting, when posted, for September 25, 2024. California Education Code Section 60119 requires that the Board hold a Public Hearing, on the subject matter, on or before the end of the eighth week from the first day pupils attend school for the year, to determine:

(a) whether each pupil in each school of the district has sufficient textbooks or instructional materials, or both, that are aligned to the content standards adopted by the California State Board of Education (“State Board”) in each of the following subjects, as appropriate, that are consistent with the content and cycles of curriculum framework adopted by the State Board:

  • Mathematics,
  • Science,
  • History-social science,
  • English language arts, including the English language development component of an adopted program; and

(b) whether each pupil enrolled in a world language or health course has sufficient textbooks or instructional materials that are consistent with the content and cycles of the curriculum frameworks adopted by the State Board for those subjects; and

(c) the availability of laboratory science equipment as applicable to science laboratory courses offered in grades 9 to 12 inclusive.

The Board, following the conclusion of the Public Hearing, by Resolution, will make a determination, on the Sufficiency of Textbooks and Instructional Materials, as delineated in (a), (b) and (c) above.
